Kyoto Prefectural University

President's Message

President Tsukamoto

I am Yasuhiro TSUKAMOTO, Dr. Ostrich.
I was appointed as the president of Kyoto Prefectural University (KPU) on April 1, 2020.

KPU was founded as Kyoto Prefectural Agricultural School in 1895. I feel deeply honored and privileged to inherit the wealth of knowledge from our predecessors, as well as the history and traditions of our university. While acknowledging the cooperation from everyone both within KPU and outside the university, it is my sincere hope to contribute, with a great sense of responsibility, to the governance and development of the administrative corporation, and to the improvement of our society.

I can assure you that you will find studying at KPU intriguing. Most students and teachers know each other. We start everyday by saying hello to each other on campus. Most faculty and administrative staff members know about each student’s personality, and their hometowns, for example, and the companies our graduates work for. Our campus is full of greenery, including some huge trees, and it is a great playground for local wildlife, including monkeys, black kites, Japanese minks, and raccoons. They watch us from the bushes, the sky, or the trees. I thoroughly enjoy working in such a warm and natural environment.

KPU has been striving toward developing new fields of research and education that will be of benefit to our society, on the basis of a deep understanding of mankind, our culture, life and environmental sciences, and regional life with the perspective of history. The famous Kamo River runs near our Shimogamo Campus and there are some beautiful views of Mt. Hiei. The campus is located in the Kitayama area of Kyoto, which is renowned as a seat for cultural activities. The area holds the Botanical Gardens, Concert Hall, and "Kyoto-gaku Rekisai-kan (Kyoto Institute, Library and Archives)".
You can reach our Shimogamo Campus from JR Kyoto Station in less than half an hour by subway. On our campus, there are lecture halls, cafeterias, a library, study halls, an RI laboratory, the Shimogamo farm, facilities for the university forests, insectaria, a computer suite, and a number of other laboratories. In addition, the array of small buildings for club activities create an atmosphere of the Showa era.
Our Seika Campus in “Keihanna Science City” incorporates plant-related field laboratories and a leading-edge affiliated farm. Practical research and education are carried out with a focus on field work. The campus also incorporates a hub for collaborations between industry, university, and government in researching the possibility for utilizing the university’s findings for society. Additionally, KPU has six university forests within Kyoto Prefecture, and they are used not only for education and research by our students and faculty members, but also for collaboration with other universities and high schools in Kyoto Prefecture through working together on field seminars. Therefore, it can be said that the whole of Kyoto Prefecture is a campus for our intellectual activities.

The expertise of our faculties: Letters, Public Policy, and Life and Environmental Sciences will continue to develop in the future. The various fields including history, literature, public policy, laws and regulations, politics, welfare, science, agriculture, architecture, design, food sciences and nutritional health, forest science, engineering, and informatics and environmental science are organically linked to each other. Our education and research fields encompass everything from genes to the universe, the past, present and future, as well as psychological viewpoints. We will continue to improve upon our education and research by exploring all the fields.
Here at KPU, we will continue to further strengthen our unique education, research, regional contributions, and application of our findings to society. Through this, we will develop into a unique “University that attracts people from all walks of life.” We will continue to improve our facilities, and steadily fulfill our mission in education with its focus on advanced information technology and globalization. I ask for the kind cooperation of our graduates, Kyoto Prefectural Government and its institutions, as well as private companies to support KPU in its new vision.
Dear current and potential students, I hope you enjoy your studies and research to the fullest!

Yasuhiro TSUKAMOTO
